Finding My Voice

In Service of the Wild: Behind the Lens at Emerald Creek

I am, by nature, an introvert. I find peace in quiet spaces — alone with my thoughts, and with the wild things that make the world feel magical. Solitude has always been my comfort. But when I began The Conservation Collage Project, I realised something important: the species I’m trying to protect can’t speak for themselves. So, if I want to help them, I have to be their voice. That means stepping out from behind the trees and the paper — even when it feels uncomfortable.

Finding purpose beyond fear

When we look beyond ourselves, when we see the bigger picture, our insecurities take on a more accurate perspective.
I can stay hidden in my studio, quietly making art and hoping it sparks change, or I can make art in protection of the wild — and tell you about it, too.

So, in service of the wild, I did a photoshoot.

The shoot at Emerald Creek

Being photographed by fellow gentle soul, Honey Atkinson, made it easy, and I was able to remind myself that the shoot wasn’t about me. It was about the project — and the call to action behind it. Nature is epic, and it can’t be brought back once lost.

Everything was simple and intentional. I took a makeup lesson so I could do it myself on the day. I wore two dresses made by Gerry at Ukiyo Boutique, a sustainable Australian fashion label, and added two homemade treasures found at the op shop. My hair was just a wash and flick, finished with my go-everywhere hat — complete with a cute little Quoll pin by Pixie Nut & Co.

We shot at the ever-beautiful Emerald Creek, surrounded by rocks, native bush, and water. When the sun dipped below the horizon, we sank into the cool water for an evening swim.

Doing something bigger than yourself

The experience was incredible. It reminded me that when you do something for a cause greater than yourself, courage comes naturally. What once felt impossible becomes simply necessary.

I’m still an introvert at heart, but I’ve learned that advocacy doesn’t always have to be loud — it just has to be honest.

The shoot started here in my backyard, before we ventured into the wilds of Emerald Creek, Far North Queensland.
